Look what we cooked up

Baby Madeline was a hearty breakfast for her first Halloween. Sadly she absolutely, resolutely refused to wear her bacon for trick-or-treating. Maybe we should have sprung for the “premium” felt… This made her daddy very sad since bacon-ness is wonderful.

Look What I Can Do

When asked to repeat this feat, Madeline promptly looked both her parents squarely in the eye and said, “I am no trained monkey, parental units. I have learned my craft as an actor and I will not have my performance debased by your sideshow antics.” And so, it begins.

Breakfast Party

We went to our friends Jen & Kevin’s house for an early morning playdate. We made fantastic breakfast tacos and Madeline got to play with Ari, Taya, & Taryn.

Listening Session #1

Madeline enjoyed her first music listening session today. To those who don’t know, Madeline has 2 parents who are arguably ridiculous enthusiastic in their appreciation and fascination with music.

For Maddie’s first listening session, we chose The Beatle’s “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. We listened to the album from the beginning through George Harrison’s “Within You, Without You” at which point Maddie decided that she was ready for her nap.

Maddie enjoyed sitting in the sweet spot of the HiFi for the first few tracks. Beginning with Paul McCartney’s “Getting Better”, she and Jen enjoyed dancing in the den.

Listening Notes:

Jen:

“Did you know that The Beatles, in recording “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” used tapes of calliope music to create the atmosphere of the Pablo Fanque circus performance that inspired the song. George Martin resorted to tapes of calliopes playing Sousa marches. He chopped the tapes up into small sections and had Geoff Emerick throw them up into the air and then re-assembled them at random.”

David:

“The MoFi remaster didamazing things to bring out the subtleties and details of the original recording. Brilliant, wide sound stage. Amazingly improved dynamics compared to the original stereo LP.”

Maddie:

“phbttt phbtt blatht”

Technical Notes:

Recording: Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab half-speed remaster pressed on 200 gram JVC “super vinyl” ripped at 24bit/96000kHz using Rega RB250 fully modified tonearm > Pro-ject Tube Box SE II preamp > TAscam US-144 > Peak Pro 6.2
Playback: Apple Mac Mini > Roland UA-1ex (sp-dif) > Parasound 7100 > Parasound 5124 > Paradigm 7seMKii/Velodyne dd15

NSFW: Baby Toe Sucking

Warning! This video is illegal to watch in at least 13 states. Do not view this video if your local community standards do not recognize the “serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific values” of baby toe sucking.

When considering if you should view this video, please refer to this synopsis of Miller v. California (1973), which established the Miller Standard, which clearly articulated that three criteria must be met for a work to be legitimately subject to state regulations. The Court recognized the inherent risk in legislating what constitutes obscenity, and necessarily limited the scope of the criteria. The criteria were:

  • The average person, applying local community standards, looking at the work in its entirety, appeals to the prurient interest.
  • The work must describe or depict, in an obviously offensive way, sexual conduct or excretory functions.
  • The work as a whole must lack “serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific values”.

As Justice Potter Stewart famously said when he concurred with the court’s opinion in Jacobellis v. Ohio 378 U.S. 184 (1964), “… (regarding obscenity)… I know it when I see it
